Signs Your Famco Damper Repair Is Failing

• Smoke backdrafts into the room. The plate has warped or the frame has shifted, breaking the seal. In Kennesaw’s humidity, cast-iron plates rust at the edges first; the gap starts small, then widens after a few heating seasons.

DIY or Call Us?

Here’s what you can safely check yourself: with the firebox cold and the damper closed, shine a flashlight up the throat and look for gaps at the plate edges. Note the handle position and whether the plate moves freely. That’s the extent of it.

What goes wrong with DIY: the plate weighs 15-25 pounds of cast iron, and it’s suspended over a drop to the smoke chamber. A slipped plate cracks the firebrick or lands on your arm. The pivot pins are spring-tensioned on some Famco models; releasing them without the right tool launches hardware into the flue or your face. And even if you get the old plate out, measuring the frame throat correctly requires a helper and a tape measure held square, inside the narrow opening.
