Everything else carries real risk. Throat dampers sit directly above the firebox, and the plate weighs 8-15 pounds of cast iron. If you drop it, you damage the firebox floor or your hands. More serious: disturbing the damper frame without inspecting the flue liner can mask a cracked liner that vents carbon monoxide into wall cavities.
