The homeowner noticed a tar-like odor whenever the fireplace was cold. Our camera scan showed glazed creosote - hardened, shiny layers baked onto the flue liner walls by repeated slow burns of unseasoned oak, common in Kennesaw’s older subdivisions near Town Center. Class III creosote can’t be brushed out with standard wire; it requires a rotary chain system and chemical treatment to break the bond. We applied the treatment, ran the chains, and swept to bare liner. The flue diameter returned from approximately 6 inches to its full 8×12 specification. Smoke Chamber Parging - Legacy Park Neighborhood
The smoke chamber - the area above the damper that funnels smoke into the flue - was corbeled brick with significant mortar loss, creating turbulence that pushed smoke into the living room on windy days. This is typical in Kennesaw homes built during the 1990s construction boom, where speed often beat precision in fireplace construction. We applied Chamber-Tech 2000 parging mix, smoothing the walls to a 45-degree slope per NFPA 211 guidelines. Draft improved immediately. Chimney Cap and Crown Rebuild - Kennesaw Mountain Vicinity
Water stains on the ceiling near the fireplace traced to a cracked concrete crown and a missing chimney cap - a combination we see frequently near Kennesaw Mountain, where wind-driven rain hits harder and freeze-thaw cycles run longer than in lower parts of Cobb County. The crown had spalling concrete and no drip edge, so water ran directly down the masonry. We formed and poured a new crown with proper slope and drip edge, then installed a stainless Gelco cap with mesh screening. No more water. The photo record shows the pour, the form removal, and the final installation - 31 images, all included under Clause 4.
Firebox Refractory Panel Replacement - Barrett Parkway Corridor
The prefab fireplace had cracked refractory panels - the heat-resistant walls that protect the metal firebox from direct flame. One crack ran corner to corner, and a section had begun to heave from thermal cycling. This is a replace-not-repair situation; patched panels fail again, and the fire rating is compromised. We sourced matching Hargrove refractory panels through Haven’s buying network, fitted them with proper expansion gaps, and sealed with refractory cement. The fireplace returned to manufacturer specification. Written price before work: $340-$450. Camera inspection confirmed no hidden damage to the surrounding structure.
Chimney Liner Inspection and Creosote Sweep - Acworth-Kennesaw Border
An insurance inspection flagged the chimney for “evaluation needed.” Our NFPA 211 Level 2 camera scan found a stainless DuraFlex liner with heavy soot accumulation and a disconnected section at the first offset - likely from improper original installation or thermal movement over fifteen heating seasons. We swept the liner, reseated and clamped the connection, and ran a second camera pass to confirm integrity. The homeowner walked away with video footage of both the problem and the resolution, plus a written condition report for their insurance file. No replacement needed. Price: $260-$320, quoted in writing before we unloaded the truck.
Prefabricated Chimney Chase Cover Replacement - Cherokee Street Historic District
The galvanized chase cover on this prefab chimney had rusted through at the seams, and water was pooling on top before seeping down the chase walls. Galvanized covers in Kennesaw’s climate typically last ten to twelve years; this one was seventeen. We measured, fabricated, and installed a stainless replacement with cross-break design - the raised X pattern that prevents standing water - and sealed all fasteners with silicone. The chase interior was dry and undamaged, so no further work was required. We documented the rust penetration, the chase interior condition, and the new cover installation: 19 photos, included standard.
